Sonic the Hedgehog 3 was released for the Sega Genesis and marked the debut of Knuckles. The player could choose to play solitary or with Tails. The game also had six save slots and featured the same 3-D Chaos Emeralds stages as Sonic and Knuckles also had. The game also had several two player simultaneous racing mini-games where players could choose between Sonic, Tails and Knuckles. The first player to complete five laps during these stages (which were unique to the series) would be crowned the winner.
