KotakuInterviewJeffery

Jeffery says he would love Seaman 2 to come to the US, but it won't happen.

Kotaku revealed a little more of their interview with Sega of America president Simon Jeffery earlier today, showing a segment where they ask him about Shenmue III, Dreamcast 2 and Seaman 2. Kotaku, of course, is just doing the standard questions you ask the developers and publishers every year, but it's clear they were having a little fun while interviewing him. Jeffery naturally denies all of them, especially the Dreamcast 2, which he says won't happen because Sega has no wish to go back into the hardware business. It's an interesting interview, which you can see here.

It's arguably the largest European gaming event, having around 185,000 visitors last year. Sega has typically shown a lot of their E3 games at the Games Convention, most likely to let people try them again or let European media outlets who weren't able to see E3 try them for the first time. Sega Can't Find Arcade Game Source Code
News: Index > E3 2008 > Archive

26 July 2008

Sega

"It's really hard to find the source code and the ROMs..."

In the (supposedly) last interview from E3 2008 with Sega of America president Simon Jeffery, he says that Sega is having a hard time trying to find the source code in the depths of Sega's offices. He also talks about how they are reluctant to release games for Xbox Live Arcade because of the required graphics upgrade they have to do to complete the "Xbox Live Arcade experience". You can find the video from the source below:

Amyscreams This article is a press release, which means it was taken from another source, most likely the originating company, and is permitted for use in any article.

LONDON & MUNICH (August 14, 2008) – SEGA® Europe Ltd. and SEGA® Germany GmbH today announced the titles which will be presented to the public and industry professionals at Games Convention 2008. Two SEGA heroes will dominate events in the consumer area (Hall 5, Booth F02), which will strongly and positively stand out from the usual trade fair booths thanks to its special design. Amigo, the clever monkey from the Samba de Amigo game series celebrates his comeback exclusively on the Wii, and at the same time, his public premiere. For the first time customers will be able to shake their Wii remotes to the beat, next to, and on the stage – 40 well-known songs and new game modes provide long-lasting enthusiasm. Samba de Amigo will also be the primary element of our professionally moderated stage show – with full audience participation.

Sonic will also be taking the trip to Leipzig and presenting himself to the public in two games. Along with his role-playing game premiere Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood, developed exclusively for the DS by BioWare, the cool hedgehog will play up his strengths in Sonic Unleashed. Visitors to the Games Convention will get to experience the new and, in many areas, heavily improved gameplay for themselves. With the Olympic Games in mind, the SEGA booth will also showcase the athletic field – along with Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games, Beijing 2008 will also be waiting for medal-worthy video game athletes. The booth will be rounded out with Dinosaur King, the game to the new TV series, and Space Siege – another thrilling PC adventure from cult designer Chris Taylor.

In the Business Center (Hall 1, Booth I31), SEGA will provide an outlook for more up-coming highlights. Notable developers from Japan (Platinum Games), the UK (Headstrong Games, The Creative Assembly), and Australia (The Creative Assembly Australia) will give media representatives a sneak peek at forthcoming SEGA titles for all platforms.

Besides a world premiere, which will be announced in time for the start of the trade fair, new versions and demos of the presented games have been developed especially for GC. The titles presented in the business area include the epic Empire: Total War, the action packed espionage RPG Alpha Protocol, Platinum Games’ highly anticipated Madworld and Bayonetta, the long-awaited comeback of Golden Axe: Beast Rider, the Japanese strategy eye-catcher Valkyria Chronicles, and Stormrise – an all new kind of strategy game designed specially for the PlayStation 3 and the Xbox 360. In addition, all titles from the consumer area will also be available in the Business Center.

A scene from Bayonetta.

Although there have been no screenshots released for Bayonetta, the action game coming to the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, Kotaku has previewed the game and even thought it deserved their "best looking game we've seen at Leipzig" honours.

While the initial demo stage takes place in a forgettable setting — yes, I already forgot about it — the new area was jaw-dropping. It takes place on the head of a clock tower, one that happens to be falling from the sky at maximum velocity. Bayonetta casually walks with her signature slink across the face of the clock as she fought off demonic angels. She did so with a mysterious female ally, both of whom were being circled by a massive, ornately decorated sky serpent. On top of the dozens of angels attacking, with clock towere debris falling in tandem and golden halos spilling everywhere, a massive winged mini-boss also attacked. With a body comprised of a decapitated marble statue head and serpentine arms, it wowed us with its artistic and technical achievements.

About The House of the Dead: Overkill

The House of the Dead: Overkill™ charges you with mowing down waves of infected, blood-thirsty zombies in a last-ditch effort to survive Bayou City and uncover the horrific truth behind the origins of The House of the Dead.

Survival horror as it’s never been seen before! A pulp-style take on the classic SEGA light-gun shoot ‘em up franchise. Back when the famous Agent G was still fresh out of the academy, he teamed up with hard-boiled bad-ass Agent Washington to investigate stories of mysterious disappearances in small-town Louisiana. Little did they know what blood-soaked mutant horror would await them in the streets and swamps of Bayou City.

GCHouseoftheDeadOverkill01

A zombie from The House of the Dead: Overkill

Both Kotaku and IGN Wii have previewed the upcoming lightgun shooter The House of the Dead: Overkill for the Wii. Kotaku did a preview with the help of Headstrong Games' Bradley Crooks. The opening paragraph follows:

About a third of the way in through the Carnival Of Fun stage in The House of the Dead Overkill, Bradley Crooks from Headstrong Games decimated a severed arm stuck in a cotton candy machine. It exploded in a sweet, sickly mess, adding to the heavy amount of gore we'd already seen in the Wii "light gun" shooter. It's also potentially the first game to feature a "live birth" on the Wii, so don't expect an E rating (or a German release).

IGN managed to see it, but didn't play the game themselves. Their opening paragraph follows:

There's no question about it: SEGA's upcoming House of the Dead: Overkill has Grindhouse to thank for its inspiration. The game essentially "reboots" the AM1 franchise with a prequel of sorts that takes place in the era of drive-in double-features. Though we didn't play the game at Games Convention in Germany today, it was certainly playable and we got a chance to see the direction this zombie blaster's going on the Wii.

You can read more of Kotaku's preview here, and IGN's preview here.

In the upcoming game Alpha Protocol, it has been revealed that players have the option to develop love interests and scenes of intimacy like in Mass Effect. Senior producer Ryan Rucinski spoke about Michael Thornton's relationships:

“It all depends on how you treat them. One may ask you to assassinate a high-level person,” he added. “Maybe that’s not something you want to do, but she’s really hot. But there are obvious repercussions. And although the women are integral to the story, there’s no need to interact with them beyond missions. Rucinski revealed that the game will have Achievements for being a ladies’ man as well as for being a lone bachelor.”

Vay for iPhone town

A town in Vay

A new Sega game has recently appeared on the iTunes Store. The Sega Mega-CD RPG Vay has come to the iPhone, with a new control scheme and interface. The iTunes Store has a description of the iPhone version:

The 1994 cult classic RPG returns with updated widescreen graphics and touchscreen controls! When your peaceful kingdom is attacked on your wedding day and your wife-to-be is kidnapped, it falls to you to stop the terrible machines of war that threaten to lay waste to the world.

The game uses Sega Mega-CD graphics for the characters and world, but uses the iPhone's standard interface elements and fonts. The character is moved using a point-and-click (or should we say, point-and-touch) method, and battle options now have button-based instead of text-based navigational menus. The movement area is still full-screen, but the remaining section of the screen is used to show character stats and location. The game is available on iTunes for $4.99.

This morning, Sega has officially announced Sonic and the Black Knight for Wii, coming Spring 2009. The game is a quasi-sequel to Sonic and the Secret Rings, which was released for Wii in early 2007 to average reviews, but great sales.

“After the success of Sonic and the Secret Rings we’re delighted to announce a second title in the Storybook Series,” said Gary Knight, European Marketing Director, SEGA Europe, “Following Sonic on his way to knighthood will excite players of all ages.”

Sega's press release is below:

SAN FRANCISCO & LONDON (July 21, 2008) -SEGA of Europe Ltd. and SEGA® of America, Inc. today announced SonicTM and the Black Knight, an all-new Wii-exclusive adventure. New information and images for the mysterious upcoming Wii game, Sonic and the Black Knight, that were inside the September issue of Nintendo Power are finally available. As you may already have heard from Sega's press release yesterday, the game is a quasi-sequel to the Arabian-themed Sonic game for Wii, Sonic and the Secret Rings. This game has the same concept as again Sonic is transported to a different time period, this time by the sorceress Merlina, who brings you to the time of King Arthur, where the fabled king has been corrupted and rules as the Black Knight. The game is even being developed by the same group, Sonic Team, who is also currently working on Sonic Unleashed. One of the main differences, apart from the use of your sword, is that Sonic is controlled with the analog stick on the Nunchuk, instead of using the tilt feature of the Wii Remote.

Sonic has the ability to help people, which will bring him closer to Knighthood, or smite them, which will take a hit to his reputation. At the end of a stage, it calculates your good deeds and your mistakes, giving you a score based on how many of each you did. You buy items from villagers, which give you bonuses and which you can trade online with friends. A "simple flick of the Wii Remote" makes Sonic do a basic slash, while more advanced combinations can produce parries and thrusts. It is currently unknown if the game will make use of Nintendo's new Wii MotionPlus to make sword use more accurate.
The skills system from Sonic and the Secret Rings is back, but the developers are making sure it doesn't slow down the game's tempo. There are playable characters in this version, but they are completely optional. Two confirmed characters are Knuckles, who can wield two swords at once, and Shadow. Older Sonic fans may appreciate that the soundtrack will be done by Jun Senoue, who is adding a Celtic vibe to familiar Sonic tunes. Also, there will be 2D and 3D levels like in Sonic Unleashed.

24 July 2008

A posting on Haklabs points to a download link for the pirated version of Super Monkey Ball for iPhone. The pirated version comes only 13 days after the release of the iPhone 3G and the App Store. The group of hackers managed to get past Apple's Fairplay DRM, which is also used to protect movies, music and other games on Apple's iTunes Store. If the hack can be applied to other media from the store, that would be a major blow to Apple's business there.

E3Madworld01

A taste of the gore in MadWorld.

Gaming website Siliconera recently interviewed Sega Associate Producer Christopher Kaminski about a new violent game from Sega called MadWorld. We've posted an excerpt below concerning the hardcore crowd on Wii.

I know you’re talking about this being a Wii exclusive with these controls, but your Grandma is not going to buy this.

[Laughs] Well, my Grandma is!

[Laughs] OK, so your Grandma is going to buy MadWorld, but the senior citizens home across the street probably won’t add this to their repertoire of Wii games. Are you worried about that? Do you think there is enough of an audience for MadWorld on the Wii?

Absolutely. You know a lot of Wii owners are hardcore gamers, they are people who love video games. There hasn’t been anything like this game before and there haven’t been a whole lot of core type games made for the Wii. We think this is going to be perfect.

Aug 2008:News:One Sega Master System and One Sega Genesis Game added to Wii Shop Channel

Amyscreams This article is a press release, which means it was taken from another source, most likely the originating company, and is permitted for use in any article.

The list of available games for Wii owners just keeps on growing as we add another trio of titles to the Wii Shop Channel. This week's lineup features Old West thrills, supernatural chills and a little blue hedgehog whose name you're sure to recognize. Thanks to Nintendo's WiiWare downloadable game service and the classic-filled Virtual Console, building your own blockbuster video game library has never been easier.

Nintendo adds new and classic games to the Wii Shop Channel at 9 a.m. Pacific time every Monday. Wii owners with a high-speed Internet connection can redeem Wii Points to download the games. Wii Points can be purchased in the Wii Shop Channel or at retail outlets. This week's new games are:

Sonic the Hedgehog (Sega Master System, 1 player, Rated E for Everyone, 500 Wii Points): Based on the original Sega Genesis version, Sonic The Hedgehog was re-created as the first Sonic game for the Sega Master System. Not just a straight port, this version includes new stages, bosses, some different zones and a level map. The most noticeable difference, however, is that the Chaos Emeralds have to be found within certain stages other than the Special Stages. Dash through six Zones (including special zones that were only available for the Sega Master System version) and face Dr. Eggman (a.k.a. Dr. Robotnik) at the end of every Zone.

Splatterhouse 2 (Sega Genesis, 1 player, Rated M for Mature—Blood and Gore, Violence, 800 Wii Points): Splatterhouse 2 is the sequel to Splatterhouse, released only on the Sega Genesis. A few months after escaping from the first mansion in Splatterhouse, the main character, Rick, once again encounters the Terror Mask and must use its powers to rescue his beloved Jennifer. Rick will need to punch, slash, smash and even chainsaw his way through a haunted mansion against unspeakable horrors and terrifying bosses to make it out alive.

Interview with Bioware about Sonic Chronicles

News: Index > General > Archive

12 August 2008

Miles Holmes talks about the upcoming Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood.

Sega Nerds has an interesting 15-minute interview with Bioware's Lead Designer Miles Holmes about Sonic's upcoming RPG, Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood with a description of their gameplay experience. The game has around eleven characters, including Amy Rose, Sonic, Tails and a new character, Shade. It shares a similar save system to Sonic Adventure, which reminded you what was happening in the game when you loaded it up again, as described below:

Fans of Sonic Adventure might remember that when you loaded up a save file, which was half way through the story of one of the characters, they had a small recap to explain what had been going on. Which helped remind players of what needs to be done.

Well Bioware has used a similar idea. When players load their file they are greeted by an extract of a journal, describing key events in the story so far and reminding players of what needs to be done next.

Miles explained that when many gamers play on handhelds they might play for a few hours at a time, but then stop and not go back to the game for a while (I know I do that a lot). Or they might only play in small chunks, on the train or bus. In the case of an RPG, players might need reminding of what’s going on, especially if they haven’t played in a long time - so that’s why they added the journal.

See more of the interview at Sega Nerds.

Sega of America President Simon Jeffery has been in many interviews recently, including this new one from Gamasutra. In it, he mentions that Yu Suzuki is not an employee anymore.

Speaking of names, what has happened to Yu Suzuki?

SJ: Last I heard, he was doing some online stuff in China.

He's spearheaded an arcade racing title. Is he just really off in his own world?

SJ: Yeah. He's kind of his own man right now. Every now and again, he'll come up with an idea, and I don't think anything has come out of that yet, but we're still working with him. He's not an employee anymore, but...

CORRECTION: The day after the interview, Simon Jeffery retracted his statements, saying that Suzuki is actually a Creative Director for Sega.

Sep 2008:News:Peter Moore remembers when he told Yuji Naka "F*** you"

News: Index > General > Archive

6 September 2008

Peter Moore at Xbox Cup 2006

Peter Moore, current EA Sports boss, at the Xbox Cup in 2006.

In a recent interview with Esquire, former Sega of America president Peter Moore, who also was Vice-President of Microsoft's Xbox 360 division, talked about his time at Sega, especially the time he got frustrated with the Sonic creator Yuji Naka. Moore helped launch the Dreamcast and led the company when it decided to move to its current platform-agnostic position in the market. During the time the Dreamcast was available, he gathered focus groups of young gamers to see what they thought of Sega and other gaming companies, asking them, "If these brands were people, who would they be?". Apparently, the consensus among the members of the focus group said Sega was the "granddad with dementia who used to be cool but you couldn't remember why." The focus group was recorded, and Moore went to Japan, bringing Japanese-dubbed tapes of the focus group to the company's headquarters to present the results. Naka, who Moore said was being "a tad conceited", accused Moore of tampering with the results.

"I lost it," remembers Moore. "I turned to the interpreter and said 'Tell him, "f*** you"'."

The translator refused to translate his message to Naka, Moore is sure that Naka got the message.

"Naka had lived in the US for three years, so I knew he understood. I walked out and never returned."

Moore also revealed some of the results for other companies from the focus group in the interview, with Rockstar being the "drunken uncle who'd show up with a hooker from Vegas" and EA - who Moore currently works for - was considered "the high-school quarter back who always got the cheerleader - an arrogant son of a bitch."

Oct 2008:News:Sega announces Prope's first two games for Wii

News: Index > General > Archive

2 October 2008

Sonic creator Yuji Naka's new development studio Prope has unveiled two new games that will be published by Sega: Let's Tap and Let's Catch. Let's Tap is a game that Naka says "can be played without holding a controller". The game is listed under the genre "tap action" and to play, all that is known so far is that the Wii Remote sits upside down on the floor, so the B button is facing upward.

The other game Prope is making is for WiiWare and it is called Let's Catch. It's a game of catch that can be played with one to four players and features six different modes, including a fast mode, a high score mode and one where the players just throw the ball at each other. It should be released for Japan in December at 1000 Wii Points.

July 2009:News:Conduit enters charts at 29th, off charts for the next week

British Sales 11 July 2009

First week (click to enlarge)

Last week, the Wii first-person shooter The Conduit debuted in Europe, and was the 29th most bought game in Britain. This week, new sales charts from the group Chart Track have shown that The Conduit is no longer in the Top 40. It is possible that the game, like many games released for Nintendo consoles, will be an "evergreen", meaning that it makes up its sales overtime as opposed to other games which spike in the first week of sales and dramatically decrease. The fact that it lasted only one week on the charts (technically one day, since the week charted ended the day after its release), could also mean that the game will not sell as well as expected or hoped and anyone who wanted to buy it had purchased it within the first week.
