Product overview[]

The Hershey’s sampler was a promotional CD that was offered with various Hershey products, requiring two to four Hershey UPC codes along with $2.99-4.99 U. S. for the CD (it is believed the offer required two UPC codes, along with paying $2.99 or $4.99). The CD had demos from four software packages from Sega Entertainment and the offer ran from August 1 though December 31, 1997.

Packaging[]

The contents were pretty minimal, as the CD did not have a back, nor side cover, and only a two page inlay card, with printing on both sides of each page (making it four pages total). The inside of the card offered a “special discounted price” for six Sega PC games (ranging from $19.99, $24.99, or $34.99), which included the Sonic CD, Virtua Squad, Sega Rally Championship, Sonic & Knuckles Collection, Garfield, and Sonic’s Schoolhouse. The back cover of the inlay card was an order form, with the first page being the CD cover. The offer for the games expired on June 30, 1998.

Game demos[]

Sonic and Knuckles Collection[]

Only the Angel Island Zone from Sonic 3 & Knuckles is available (including bonus rounds), plus the player can choose between using Sonic, Knuckles, Tails, or Sonic with Tails.

  • System requirements: Windows 95
  • CPU type/speed: 486 DX2 100 MHz
  • Memory: 8MB
  • Rating: ESRB: K-A

Garfield[]

This could be the same game as the Garfield: Caught in the Act release for the Sega Genesis. Garfield wakes up in a dream world, going through odd stages as a result, collecting items, activating mechanisms and taking care of enemies in this platformer. Also includes a “Whack-a-mole”-type game as well in the demo.

  • System requirements: Windows 3.1 or 95
  • CPU type/speed: Pentium processor, 60 Mz
  • Memory: 8MB
  • Rating: ESRB: K-A

Sonic CD[]

This is a port of the Sega CD game, which this demo contains one of its early levels.

  • System requirements: Windows 95
  • CPU type/speed: 486 DX 100 MHz
  • Memory: 8MB Minimum Install: 2MB
  • Rating: ESRB: K-A

Sonic’s Schoolhouse[]

Educational game where Sonic must answer questions on a blackboard, which requires the player to move him in and out of classroom doors to grab numbers or letters in order to solve problems. There are several additional unlockable modes that are shown, but not available in the demo.

  • System requirements: Windows 3.1 or 95
  • CPU type/speed: 486 DX2 66 MHz
  • Memory: 8MB Minimum Install: 3MB
  • Rating: ESRB: eC

Notes[]

Obviously most of these demos are not going to be able to run on modern day computers unless they have specific programs in order to do so (such as a slowdown utility). Sonic CD has to have the 256 color mode selected in order to be able to play, for example; Sonic’s Schoolhouse has been tested on a computer with Windows 2000, which ran, but without any sound. Only Sonic 3 & Knuckles out of the Sonic & Knuckles Collection can play on a computer running Windows XP, although it runs too fast unless its display is changed to the full screen mode, which the demo then becomes playable.
